Today, on the Feast of the Nativity of St John the Forerunner and Baptist of the Lord, His Grace Bishop Nektarije of London and Great Britain and Ireland attended the National Parliamentary Prayer Breakfast at the Houses of Parliament in London.
The event was held in the ancient Westminster Hall, with approximately 650 Members of Parliament, Peers and other church representatives in attendance. Bishop Nektarije was invited by Archbishop Angaelos of the Coptic Orthodox Church, based in London, a long-standing friend of Bishop Nektarije and a sincere friend of our Church. Bishop Nektarije was seated beside Archbishop Angaelos throughout the Prayer Breakfast.
This year’s theme was: “Hope for the Future.”
The National Parliamentary Prayer Breakfast is a long-standing annual event held at Westminster, offering an opportunity to reflect upon the relevance of the Christian faith to public life and its role in contemporary society.
During the gathering, Bishop Nektarije met a number of prominent Christian figures engaged in public life and service, including Sir Lindsay Hoyle, the Speaker of the House of Commons. Sir Lindsay, who was raised in a Christian household, has often emphasised the importance of faith in public life and has spoken of the celebration of faith as being at the heart of democracy. He also supports the continuation of the historic prayers which have been read in the Chamber of the House of Commons for 500 years.
